Drug Uses
Zestoretic is indicated for treatment of high blood pressure.
How Taken
Use Zestoretic as directed by your doctor. To avoid stomach upset take Zestoretic with a meal. If you take cholestyramine or colestipol, do not take it at the same time that you take Zestoretic. Talk with your doctor about how you should take cholestyramine or colestipol with Zestoretic. Take Zestoretic regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking Zestoretic at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Zestoretic, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Zestoretic, if you have giant hives or skin inflammation, impaired liver function, diabetes, bone marrow suppression, blood vessel problems of the brain (e.g., stroke), gout, high blood potassium levels, low blood sodium levels, heart disease, scleroderma, severe immune system problems, or lupus, or you are on a sodium restricted diet, if you have a history of allergies or asthma, if you have a history of kidney artery narrowing, decreased kidney function, you are on dialysis, or you have had a kidney transplant, or if you are scheduled to have major surgery or to receive anesthesia, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. Use of Zestoretic during pregnancy has resulted in fetal and newborn death. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. Zestoretic is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast–feed while taking Zestoretic. Some medicines may interact with Zestoretic. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Do not take Zestoretic if you have a history of angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue), have a history of kidney artery narrowing, if you are unable to urinate, you are taking dofetilide or ketanserin, you are in your second or third trimester of pregnancy. Do not use salt substitutes containing potassium without talking with your health care provider. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Zestoretic and avoid engaging in activities that cause excessive sweating. Dehydration, excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea may lead to a fall in blood pressure. Contact your doctor at once if any of these occur. Zestoretic may raise your blood sugar. High blood sugar may make you feel confused, drowsy, or thirsty. It can also make you flush, breathe faster, or have a fruit–like breath odor. If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor right away. A persistent, unproductive cough may occur. Tell your doctor if this occurs. Recovery is rapid when the medicine is stopped. Black patients are at higher risk for certain side effects and may not respond as well to Zestoretic as patients of other races. Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Zestoretic. Zestoretic may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Zestoretic. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of Zestoretic. Use Zestoretic with extreme caution in children. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are- Coughing, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, nausea, persistent nonproductive cough, tiredness, vomiting. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately- allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), confusion, difficulty swallowing, fainting, fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, fever, hoarseness, increased hunger or thirst, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, severe dizziness or lightheadedness, shortness of breath, sore throat, unusual or severe drowsiness, unusual stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Storage
Store Zestoretic at 77 °F (25 °C), excursions permitted to 59 to 86 °F (15 to 30 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Zestoretic out of the reach of children.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Zestoretic overdose are- dizziness, fainting, weakness.
More Information
Zestoretic may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. These effects may worsen if Zestoretic is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Zestoretic with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Zestoretic should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
